Yeqiang Wang (b. 1965, Sichuan, China) is a contemporary painter whose work examines cultural displacement, perception, and visual hybridity. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts, China, in 1991, and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts at the University of Windsor, Canada, in 2000.
Since 2001, Wang has developed the Reflection series, in which the human figure functions as the primary subject and glass operates as a conceptual metaphor for diasporic identity and the mediated perception of Western culture. Through layered reflections and visual distortions, this body of work investigates the intersection of identity, memory, and cultural transition.
In 2012, Wang initiated the Return to Classicism painting series, drawing upon Western canonical masterpieces as points of departure. Employing photography as a reconstructive tool, he reinterprets these historical works through contemporary visual language. Modern urban symbols—such as billboards, automobiles, neon signage, and advertising posters—are superimposed onto classical figures, generating a surreal visual tension that juxtaposes historical tradition with contemporary consumer culture.
Wang’s work has been exhibited widely in national juried exhibitions throughout the United States and has received numerous awards, including First Place in the National Show Forms, Flesh, Frame at Epperson Gallery, Crockett, California (2024); First Place in the REPRESENTATIONAL 2023 Inaugural National Juried Exhibition at the Heartland Art Club, Kirkwood, Missouri; Best of Show at the National Juried Show at the Tomahawk Community Center, Overland Park, Kansas (2021); Best of Show at the National Portraits & Figures Show at the Rice Gallery of Fine Art, Overland Park, Kansas (2019); First Place in the 53rd Founders Juried Awards Exhibition, Naples, Florida (2019); Award of Excellence in the 30th Annual Northern National Art Competition, Rhinelander, Wisconsin (2017); First Place in the Wichita National All-Media Exhibition at the Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita, Kansas (2017); Best of Show at the National Juried Show at Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, Overland Park, Kansas (2017); First Place in Texas National 2017 at Reavley Gallery, Nacogdoches, Texas; and Best of Show at the National Juried Exhibition at the Buchanan Center for the Arts, Monmouth, Illinois (2016).
